Housing

This information was last updated: March 23, 2020 at 5:45 pm

The university is requiring all students who can safely do so to return to their permanent home address to take their classes for the rest of the semester.

We are not closing our residence halls. But we are asking all students who can go elsewhere to do so.

For those who cannot leave, we will work with you to ensure you will have a safe and supportive home here as you continue your studies.

Please rest assured that this decision was thoroughly vetted, weighing all pros and cons, and that we are doing everything in our power to make the move-out process as organized and safe as we can for everyone involved.

Move Out Information

UPDATE MARCH 20: The Move-Out process has been suspended until further notice in response to Governor Pritzker’s stay-at-home order for the state of Illinois. Visit University Housing’s Coronavirus page for the latest information about Move-Out.

Please do not return to campus to move out during the stay-at-home order. Your personal belongings will remain securely locked in your room.Further instruction on how to retrieve, ship, or store your belongings will be sent out via email soon as possible.

You will still be prorated for your room assignment and academic meal plan as of March 14, unless you choose to remain in University Housing as part of Continued Housing.

Dining Services

The university dining hall facilities are exempt from the state-ordered closure of restaurants in Illinois. The university has stopped buffet-style service and has moved to a plated system — food is plated by dining staff — and “grab and go” takeout service only. All meals are served on disposable products.

Refunds

Please allow up to two weeks to see changes reflected on your student account.

Residents who no longer live in University Housing (i.e. permanent address is no longer with University Housing): Will be prorated for their permanent room assignment and academic meal plan as of March 14.

Residents who choose to remain in University Housing as part of Continued Housing: Will continue to be charged room and board at their existing rate. Room assignments will be prorated to the last night in Continued Housing. Meal plans will be prorated to the week of the last night in Continued Housing.

Students Living Off Campus

Student housing options that are not owned and managed by University Housing are not in the jurisdiction of nor affiliated with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Please contact your specific property owner for their move-out and leasing policies.

Students should carefully review their lease.  Student Legal Services advises that it is unlikely that COVID-19 would serve as a basis to terminate one’s lease. Non-payment of rent due to COVID-19 will lead to a Five Day Notice and potential eviction, which goes on record.  Locally the courts are temporarily closed but once reopened, evictions will likely be filed for non-payment which goes on public records and credit reports.
